Chinese Dragon

Description

I thought about it for a while, and I finally settled on the idea of making the asiatic dragon a synapsid. It makes sense, since many depictions give it both mammal and reptile qualities.
The chinese variety is the one depicted here; it has a reddish brown coloration and faint stripes towards the tail. It has small blunt horns with long coarse hair growing from them rather like the horns on a giraffe. The long, sensitive whiskers aid in night time hunts. It will catch and eat any smaller animal, especially frogs, waterfowl and fish usually by ambush or raiding nests. The five toes are all webbed, which is useful for swimming, but they have also been reported to climb large trees when given proper motivation. Like crocodiles, their nostrils are on top of the head and they move surprisingly fast despite the relatively short legs.
Females lay one or two large leathery white eggs shortly after mating. Males fight for control of territory and mating rights to females in that territory, but do not aid in raising young. The eggs take almost a year to hatch, and the mother guards them viciously. It is thought that the myth of dragons chasing pearls arose from the way the mother will carry her egg in her mouth to move it to a safer place if she feels threatened. The young are brought food and protected by the mother for several months, by this time the young are about six feet long.
Japanese dragons are slightly more slender in build. The coloration is more of a dark gray to greenish, and they are better adapted to an aquatic lifestyle.

I like the idea of associating Asian dragons with synapsids too.
